First impressions

Have you ever been watching a movie/TV show, seen the main actor, automatically think to yourself “there goes another actor destined for the rubbish parts”? I remember watching the Jamie Foxx show a few years back, I sat through a few of those episodes during my teen years and the first thought that crossed my mind was that I was watching another Martin Lawrence type actor, a comedian who wasn’t really all that funny and would perhaps get a decent movie or two out in his time, but would mostly be remembered for his many non-funny, just plain bad films. Imagine my surprise when a few years later I turn on the news and see that Jamie Foxx got an Oscar for best achievement in acting, and actually made more movies that were… well, good. Marlon Wayans surprised me as well when I saw him in Requiem for a Dream, and Jeremy Renner, who I first noticed in National Lampoons Senior Trip about 10 years ago is being nominated for an Oscar for his role in The Hurt Locker.

This has really reaffirmed my believes that even though first impressions are important as they shape the opinion others will have of you, they can be changed. A person could go from having people see him as a lazy bum destined for nothing more than the undignified jobs, to all of a sudden being a person who others envy. It’s simple really, step one is not giving a damn what others think, I really don’t imagine Jamie Foxx sitting at home and giving a second thought about people like me who thought he would never make a good actor, except perhaps to motivate himself to prove those people wrong.

Motivation is key, not becoming the negative thing others view you as is vital. Motivation is hard to find though when you are constantly faced with rejection, work otherwise, so it’s important to savor every good thing that comes our way. I lost 2.74% of body fat over the first 4 weeks on my diet/exercise plan. Made me happy and at the same time it gave me something to aim at for the next 4 weeks, this time I hope to cut 3% off body fat, but more on that later.
